Rebuilding Strength & Confidence: Dorothy’s Wellness Story with YMCA

Dorothy Ford Active Wellness Suite

After undergoing a hip replacement, many people might take it slow — but not Dorothy. A former athlete with a love for sport and competition, Dorothy turned her recovery into a success story with the help of the YMCA Active Wellness Suite at Thornton.

Her journey is a powerful example of how staying active, connected, and supported can lead to remarkable improvements in both body and mind.

A Lifetime of Movement

Dorothy’s passion for sport started early — from playing hockey for Lancashire to competing in high-level tennis tournaments. Even now, she plays crown-green boules, and helps teach others how to play. But years of physical activity took a toll, and when pain in her hip began to interfere with her lifestyle, she knew it was time to act.

After her operation in February 2024, she discovered the YMCA’s Active Wellness Suite through a social prescribing event at Cleveleys Library — and it quickly became a key part of her recovery.

“The staff are so welcoming — it feels like a home from home,” Dorothy says. “I meet someone new every time I come.”

A Supported Path to Recovery

Dorothy joined in November, just months after surgery, and now visits the suite four times a week. With the guidance of staff, she adjusted her workout pace and techniques to maximise results.

The difference has been remarkable. She’s built strength in her upper body — enough to get in and out of the bath on her own, something she couldn’t do for four months post-op. That small but significant victory has improved her recovery and boosted her wellbeing.

“It makes me happy — and that brings confidence.”

Community, Friendship & Confidence

Beyond the physical gains, Dorothy speaks warmly about the social side of YMCA life. She’s connected with over 50 new people since joining and calls the community around her “a group of friends”.

“It’s not just a gym — it’s a place where people support each other. You work hard, but you’re chatting and laughing while you do it.”

This social motivation has helped her stay consistent — and made every visit something to look forward to.

A Life of Service, Recognised

In recognition of her long-standing contributions to the local community, Dorothy was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in October 2024, presented at Lancaster Castle — a moment that reflects the strength, spirit, and generosity she brings to everything she does.

A Message to Others

Dorothy is passionate about encouraging others to get moving, no matter their age or ability:

“You can get very insular and just stay at home. But there’s a life out there — and it makes you feel young again!”
